My Tokyo Treat Box Review: Is It Worth It?

Have you heard of this Japanese-themed food box and wondered what it was all about? In this post, I’ll give you my honest Tokyo Treat Box review and whether I think it’s worth the investment. I’ll also cover important information to help you get the most out of your purchase.

*** Tokyo Treat Box was kind enough to provide a free sample of their box for me to review. However, all of the thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are 100% my own and not influenced by their generosity. ***

Tokyo Treat Box Review Summary

I enjoyed many of the snacks included in the Tokyo Treat Box. Since I haven’t been to Japan yet (it’s definitely on my bucket list), it offered me a fun way to experience some of its iconic flavors.

This treat box would be a fantastic gift for anyone who wants to remember their time in Japan, is planning to travel there, or as a way to virtually experience the world when you can’t travel.

Whether you purchase an ongoing subscription or just a one-time box, Tokyo Treat is worth a purchase and is an exciting way to immerse yourself in Japanese culture.

What is a Tokyo Treat Box?

Experiencing the food of a country is one of the ways to fully embrace its culture. The Toyko Treat Box will help you get a taste of Japan with its unique flavors, transporting you to the country.

Curated and offering special themes, each box is different and unique. I had the Valentine’s Day box which was crafted for the month of February. It featured the flavor of strawberry and had interesting facts and information about how Japan celebrates the holiday.

Other themes may include Cherry Blossoms, Fall, Spring, and more.

Additionally, each box will have 15-20 snacks or treats and include at least one drink, a type of instant ramen, a unique and hard-to-find flavor of KitKat, chips (or salty snacks), candy, and a baked item (cookies, cakes, or bread). My box had a combination of sweet and savory items, some of which were spicy.

Who the Tokyo Treat Box is for

This is perfect for anyone who wants to relive a visit to Japan, loves trying international food, wants to get excited about a trip to Japan, or for someone with mobility problems who may not be able to travel that far but still wants to experience the country.

Essentially, this is a great option for almost anyone. However, if you have food allergies or don’t like trying new things, this may not be the best option for you.

How Much it Costs

Prices start at $37.50 per month (if you buy an individual box) and decrease if you purchase longer subscriptions. I’ve listed the current pricing below (as of January 2024) which is listed in USD.

It should also be noted that the cost of shipping is not included and will vary depending on which option you choose. Furthermore, shipping options will be based on which country the box will be delivered to. For example, there is only one option for the United States which costs $12.50 per box.

Is Tokyo Treat Box Worth the Price?

The cheapest plan/subscription will cost you approximately $45 per month (including shipping). While there are cheaper international snack boxes out there, they also tend to be smaller in size/quantity. Compared to other international snack boxes of this size and caliber, $45 per month is an average price.

Having said that, determining whether or not the Tokyo Treat Box is worth it (especially for the price) is a personal decision. If you love Japanese food and find it hard to find where you live, it may absolutely be worth it for you to get a yearly or even 6-month plan.

Similarly, if you are looking for a fun and unique gift to give yourself or someone you love, then a one-time box may be worth it. Just remember to cancel after 1 month as your subscription auto-renews.

I enjoyed eating my way through my box. While there were a couple of items that weren’t my favorite (I can’t handle spicy food), I really enjoyed most of what my box had to offer. I would definitely consider giving it as a gift or ordering it for myself for a special occasion.

Ultimately it is up to you to decide.

What You’ll Find in Your Box

Okay, so by now I’m sure you’re dying to know what I got in my box to help you determine if you’d like to order one for yourself. I’ve broken down this section into the types of things you can find in every box and then listed the specific items I received and what I thought of them.

***Please note not all items in my box are pictured.

Information Booklet

The information booklet on the top of your treat box is your guide to everything that lies inside. Since all of the snack packaging is in Japanese, you can either play snack roulette or look inside the book for an English description of each treat.

Additionally, it contains fun facts and information about Japanese culture relating to the theme of your specific box. It’s a wonderful way to add to the experience as you chow down on the delightful snacks.

Candy/Chocolate

Anyone who knows me will agree that I’m the living definition of a chocoholic. I especially love dark chocolate, so I was excited to try these delectable individually wrapped bites of heaven.

Needless to say, they were wonderful. The perfect balance of dark chocolate without being overly bitter.

Of course, there were other types of candy as well. There was a cola-flavored fizzy candy that took me back to my childhood as well as several types of strawberry-flavored treats, that were creamy and delicious.

The Pokemon-themed candy reminded me a lot of the messaged heart candy that we have here in the United States that is on sale around Valentine’s Day. Unlike the candy in the US, however, this had a pleasant strawberry taste.

Chips or Salty Snacks

If you are more of a salt or savory kind of person, don’t worry, there were plenty of chips and even a nut-inspired snack. I expected the caramel taro to be an actual nut, but it was more like a peanut-flavored hard wafer or cookie in the shape of a peanut. Either way, it was still quite yummy!

There were four different flavors of what I would call chips. A seafood-flavored potato chip (or crisp), a spicy chili tomato chip, an umami rice cracker, and a corn puff. The corn puff was light and had a hint of shrimp flavor. Unfortunately, spicy food makes my stomach act up so I wasn’t able to try the tomato chip.

However, the others had a unique flavor that was very new to me. They were okay, especially since I’m not a seafood fan. I know that many other people would find them even more satisfying.

Baked Item(s)

I’m not sure if the baked chocolate is supposed to be in the candy section or the baked section, but I’m putting it here because it literally has baked in the name. These were individually wrapped chocolates that tasted like a brownie but in the form of a dry cookie. I really enjoyed them as a quick chocolatey bite.

The other baked item I got was a cute pack of donuts. I loved the Hello Kitty packaging as I was a huge fan growing up. The donuts were also delicious! They had a light maple flavor with a granulated sugar coating.

Drink

Who doesn’t love a good juice drink? This one combined the flavors of apple, orange, and peach. It was a refreshing way to wash down some of the other treats, without being overly sweet.

Instant Ramen

As I mentioned before, spicy food is not my friend. In fact, it can give me stomach issues for days. As a result, I didn’t try the instant ramen noodles. Instead, I gave them as a gift to a friend who said they were delicious.

Rare Japanese Kit Kat Flavors

Kit Kats are one of my all-time favorite snacks. I mean who doesn’t love them? Well, when you travel to other countries, you can sometimes find unique flavors that aren’t available in the United States.

So, I was pretty excited to see a strawberry shortcake flavor Kit Kat in my Tokyo Treat Box. Instead of milk chocolate, the wafers were covered with white chocolate that contained bits and pieces of freeze-dried strawberries. It had a wonderful (not fake) flavor that packed a punch.

They came in a pouch that had several snack-size Kit Kat’s inside. Needless to say, they were yummy and didn’t last long.

Tokyo Treat Box Review: Pros and Cons

I don’t believe that there is ever a perfect product. As a result, in this section, I’ll share some of my thoughts on what I loved about the Tokyo Treat Box as well as where it could improve.

Pros

Here is what I loved about my Tokyo Treat Box.

☑️ It’s Tasty

It’s hard to please everyone’s palettes and tastes. However, I think the box did a great job of having something for everyone. While some of the flavors were not my cup of tea (mainly the spicy ones), there were plenty of things I really enjoyed. As a whole, there were more things that I liked than I didn’t.

☑️ Iconic Japanese Characters

Anyone who is a fan of Japanese Anime will love some of the packaging and themed treats inside the box. In my edition, there was a Pokémon-themed snack inside. Other boxes may include other Anime characters.

☑️ It’s Educational

The information booklet that comes with the box was a wonderful bonus. I loved learning about how Japan celebrates Valentine’s Day and how they also have a White Day that relates to this iconic holiday. It was a fun look inside the culture and something that I really enjoyed reading.

Of course, there was other relevant and interesting information in there as well, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise if you end up deciding to purchase this box.

☑️ It Can Be Given as a Gift

Let’s say you live far from a friend or family member but think they’d love this box as a gift. No problem! On the Tokyo Treat website, there is the option to send it as a gift.

This means you can order and pay whatever level of subscription you’d like and have it sent to someone else. This makes the gift-giving process super easy. Just remember that you will also be paying the shipping costs for the gift so the recipient doesn’t have to.

Cons

While I really enjoyed my box, there are some things that could be improved or that you should be aware of.

☑️ Be Careful if You Have Food Allergies

All of the writing on the snack packages are in Japanese. So, if you aren’t fluent in the language, it would be hard to tell if there are any allergens or ingredients that may be problematic for you.

The company attempts to help this situation by providing information on common allergens contained in each item in the information book. However, if you have a rare allergy or want to know specific ingredients to determine the food’s safety, you’ll need to use a translator app that allows you to take a picture and then translates the writing.

☑️ Shipping Isn’t Included

When looking at the cost of the Tokyo Treat Box, it can be deceiving as the cost of shipping is not included. As a result, you will need to look up the country the box will be shipped to in order to determine the full price. Typically, the cost of shipping is an additional $12.50 per box.

Important Tips and Information

If you are excited about ordering your own Tokyo Treat Box, there are a couple of important things to know to help you have the most enjoyable experience and know what to expect.

It Auto-Renews

Keep an eye on your subscription plan as they auto-renew. However, you do have the option to either cancel your subscription or skip a month if money is tight. To do this, you will need to access your “My Account Dashboard” on the Tokyo Treat website.

Shipping and Delivery Times

New boxes become available mid-month and take 3-5 days to be prepared, packed, and sent to the shipping company. All boxes are shipped from Tokyo Japan.

Delivery times will vary based on which country you are ordering from/having it shipped to and depend on the delivery company. I’ve listed the estimated delivery times (by shipping company) according to the Tokyo Treat website.

  • DHL Shipping: 3-5 days
  • Express Shipping: 5-10 days
  • Japan Post Priority Shipping: 14-28 days
  • Surface Mail: 60-90 days

I’m in the United States and my box was delivered by DHL Shipping which included a tracking number. I received my box on January 20th which is only approximately 5 days after the February box became available.

Final Thoughts: Is the Tokyo Treat Box Worth It

Overall, I really enjoyed getting a taste of Japan through my Tokyo Treat Box. It exposed me to new flavors and provided interesting information about the culture there. I’d say that ordering a Tokyo Treat Box is worth it for the experience and I would order one as a gift for a friend or for myself when I get my plane tickets for Japan.
