Detailed Itinerary

May 7th

Arrive at Salzburg airport to meet up with the rest of the group. Take the included transfer to the hotel where you can rest up from your journey. We will all meet up for a dinner (not included) to celebrate the start of our trip.

May 8th

Salzburg is probably best known for the many filming locations from the iconic movie, The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews. Today, we will embark on a full-day tour to see many of these iconic and beautiful spots.

Make sure to have your camera ready (and your voice warmed up) as we hum the music to the movie during our tour of these famous areas which include Mirabell Gardens, Leopoldskron Palace, Hellbrunn Palace, Nonnberg Abbey, and Mondsee, just to name a few.

May 9th

Today we stay in Salzburg to learn more about the city and see some of its best-known buildings, including Hohensalzburg Fortress. During our 6-hour walking/rolling tour, we will visit places such as Mirabell Garden, Mozart’s Birthplace, and Salzburg Cathedral while learning about the history and significance of the city.

Aside from being known for the Sound of Music, Salzburg is also the birthplace of the famous composer, Mozart. After taking some time in the afternoon to rest after our walking tour, we will meet again after dinner to attend a classical music performance at Mirabell Palace which will celebrate Mozart’s work.

May 10th

Salzburg is a fantastic destination for exploring nearby towns and areas in Austria. Of course, we will take advantage of its location by traveling to the iconic village of Hallstatt.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Hallstatt and surrounded by the majestic Dachstein mountains, this town is often hailed as one of the most picturesque villages in the world.

While here,, explore the village’s cobblestone streets lined with charming pastel-colored houses, adorned with window boxes overflowing with flowers. Then take a stroll along the lakeshore which offers breathtaking views of the waters of Lake Hallstatt, framed by towering mountains.

To get a different perspective of the town, you can also choose to take a boat ride on the lake (for an additional cost). Afterward, culinary delights await with cozy cafes and traditional Austrian restaurants serving up local specialties such as schnitzel, strudel, and freshly caught fish from the lake.

May 11th

If you are a mountain lover like me, you’ll be excited about our day trip to the Austrian Alps. Today we will drive along the Großglockner pass road to experience stunning landscapes, including lush green meadows, cascading waterfalls, and towering mountain peaks dusted with snow.

This route is known for not only for its natural beauty but also for its cultural significance. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich Alpine heritage, with charming mountain villages dotting the landscape and offering a glimpse into traditional Austrian life.

The road is also home to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, a renowned viewpoint that provides a panoramic vista of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and valleys, leaving visitors in awe of the sheer grandeur of the Alpine scenery.

May 12th

Today is free for independent exploration. While we visited many of the highlights of Salzburg during our city tour, there may be some places you’d like to return to. Likewise, maybe you need some time to rest after a busy itinerary.

Feel free to spend the day however you would like. I’ll provide you with some accessible options as ideas.

  • Mozart’s Residence
While his birthplace is not accessible, the house where he lived when he was older is! Roll through the halls and learn more about the lifestyle of Mozart as you tour his home.
  • Beer Tour
Austria is known for its beer. Try some craft beers on a tour dedicated to learning about the brewing process as well as local drinking customs.
  • Mirabell Palace Inside Tour
While we will have already visited the gardens and gone inside for a concert, we will not have had the opportunity for a full tour of the inside of the palace. If you would like to explore it more, this would be a wonderful opportunity to do so.
  • Shop on Getreidegasse
This famous shopping street is full of an array of stores where you can pick up souvenirs or just window shop.

Then, in the evening, meet with the group one last time for a cooking class and farewell dinner. We will learn to make pretzels, dumplings, and of course, Austria’s famous apple strudel and then get to savor our creations.

May 13th

Sadly, today we must say goodbye. We will take an included airport transfer so we can catch our flights home, or at least to our next destination.

Wheelchair Accessible Salzburg Trip Pricing Information

I strive to have all the trips I organize include as much as possible in the cost while also keeping them affordable. However, there are some items not included in the price to allow for flexibility.

Pricing and Inclusions/Exclusions

In this section, I’ll give you pricing information along with exactly what it includes and excludes.

Pricing

The trip costs $2,626.50 per person. There is a $940 per person non-refundable deposit to secure your spot.

These prices are based on 2 people sharing a room and a full tour of 6 people.

Due to the limited number of wheelchair spaces available in the van, and the fact that most of my audience has mobility problems, I will not be able to assist you in finding a roommate if you are a solo traveler for this trip.

As a result, unfortunately, if you are traveling on your own, the single supplement fee will be substantial and double the cost of your trip. However, if you know of a friend or someone who would be interested in traveling with you, they are more than welcome to join you/us on the tour.

However, I can provide you with the names and contact information of people who act as caregivers should you need assistance during the trip. While these caregivers charge for their services, it is an option to consider if you will need assistance during the trip.

Inclusions

  • 6-night stay in an accessible room in a 3* (or better) hotel
  • Breakfasts
  • Airport transfers in an adapted vehicle
  • All tours and activities as mentioned in the itinerary
  • 1 Dinner/cooking class
  • Transportation in an adapted vehicle that allows you to stay in your wheelchair

Exclusions

  • Airfare
  • Travel Insurance (highly recommended)
  • Tipping
  • Personal Expenses
  • Lunches and Dinners (unless specifically stated that they are included)
  • City taxes which can be paid at the hotel on arrival
  • Airport transfers outside of the designated meeting time

Important Trip Information

If you’re like me, you are excited for this fantastic trip. However, there are some important details you should know before signing up.

➡️ Group Size

This group will have a maximum of 6 people (3 wheelchair users and 3 companions). This number is limited due to what the accessible transportation can accommodate as well as the limited number of accessible hotel rooms.

Furthermore, two of these spots will be taken by myself and my travel companion. As a result, there are 2 accessible rooms left and the ability to accommodate 2 wheelchair users and 2 able-bodied people.

➡️ Accessibility Information

This trip to Salzburg was designed with accessibility in mind. However, I know that everyone’s needs will vary. If you have questions about specific needs or features, please let me know so we can ensure this trip is a good fit for you.

To start, here is some information about the accessibility of the trip to help you make an informed decision.

Hotels

Accessible hotel rooms may differ from what you are used to in the United States or elsewhere in the world. All rooms will have roll-in showers but seats may not be attached to the wall.

I’ve added photos from the hotel we will be staying at so you can determine if this will meet your needs. Please note that there are two different bathroom layouts. The first shown has an attached shower chair while the other uses a portable shower chair that the hotel provides.

Transportation

Additionally, this tour uses adapted transportation in a van that allows you to remain in your wheelchair. Please let me know the dimensions of your chair when booking so I can ensure room in the vehicle.

Public transportation (for your independent day) is accessible with fold-out ramps on the buses and accessible entrances on trams.

Potential Challenges

There may be cobblestones in areas that may present some challenges. We will do our best to use the most accessible routes.

Similarly, there may be some inclines present that depending on your abilities and if you are in a manual wheelchair, you may require assistance with.

➡️ Altitude

The highest altitude we will reach during the trip is 8,200 feet when we take a day trip to the Austrian Alps. If you have any concerns about altitude, please speak with your doctor before booking the trip to ensure your safety.

➡️ Weather

Average high temperatures in Salzburg for May can range from mid 50’s to mid 60’s with lows ranging from upper 30’s to low to mid 40’s. Additionally, it is not uncommon to see showers during this time.

Since we will also be traveling into the Alps, when packing for this trip, be prepared by having layers and appropriate rain gear.

Please also note that I have no control over the weather as unfortunately, I am not Mother Nature.

Trip FAQs

Are You a Travel Agent?

No, I am not a travel agent. I am someone with a disability who uses a wheelchair when I travel. I started this wheelchair-accessible travel blog and started organizing accessible small group tours in order to try to help make accessible travel easier.

Likewise, I am not a tour operator. I enlist the help of local businesses to run and organize the tours we will be participating in during this trip. I choose companies that have good/great reviews and have experience assisting people with disabilities.

Booking this trip will be done with an accessible travel agent that I have met. She will be responsible for booking the hotel rooms and handling the financial part of the trip.

Why Should I Travel with You?

As someone who lives with a disability, I have successfully traveled to over 20 countries across 4 continents. I will be visiting my 5th continent in September of this year. As a result, I understand the needs and concerns of travelers with disabilities.

Furthermore, the accessible small group tours that I organize are designed to help you travel to your dream destinations at a cost that is more affordable than if you were to travel independently and using accessible services.

Finally, when you travel with me on one of these tours, I also provide support by answering all of your questions and providing important travel tips and information to help you enjoy and get the most out of your trip.

Can You Help Me with Flights?

Since I am not a travel agent, I cannot book flights for you. Additionally, I typically recommend that you book your flights directly with the airline so that if any problems arise, you don’t have to wait for whoever you booked with to deal with the airline on your behalf.

However, if you need assistance researching flight options, I can assist you with that and then you can book directly.

What Time Should My Flight Arrive in Salzburg? When Should It Depart?

At the time of this writing, flights for May 2025 are not yet available. As a result, I cannot provide you with this information yet. However, as flight schedules are released, I will provide you with guidance on when your flight should arrive and depart so you can participate in the included airport transfers.

Can I Extend My Trip?

If you would like the option to add on an additional night in Salzburg, either before or after the small group tour, we can check availability at the hotel.

However, please note that the hotel could not guarantee the availability of the accessible rooms (they aren’t able to hold them) so we would need to know ASAP to ensure the best availability for you.

If you choose this option, please be aware that you will need to arrange and pay for your own airport transfers.

Do You Help Arrange Care Providers?

If you require assistance during this trip and do not have someone to travel with, please let me know. I can provide you with some names and contacts of people who may be able to travel with you (for a cost) to help with any care or needs you may have.

Are Equipment Rentals Available?

Unfortunately, rental equipment is not available in Salzburg. If you require a mobility device or special equipment you should plan to bring your own.

What Other Small Group Tours Do You Have Scheduled?

In addition to this trip to Austria, I have several other wheelchair-accessible small group tours available in 2025. You are welcome to join me on any one of them. Additionally, if you have a destination you’d like to travel to but don’t see it on the list, please let me know!

Final Thoughts on the Wheelchair Accessible Salzburg Small Group Tour

I truly believe that this is going to be a wonderful trip and I hope that I get to share it with you. I look forward to meeting you in person and traveling together. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.
